My workplace is
chaotic! Tuesday the mafundi moved in to start the renovations. A DFAT Grant
has given us the money to put cement floors in the classrooms and paint the
walls. We’ll also get new whiteboards,
solar powered lights and ceiling fans.
We won’t know ourselves!
There is also money
for new resources – books, posters, software – and furniture repairs. I spent a
very happy hour in KASE Book Shop looking at novels written by and about East
Africans that would be suitable for our students, to supplement the old and
often culturally irrelevant books in the library. This was doubly enjoyable
because I’d spent Monday dragging all the books off the shelves in the library
for the boys to stack o n a tarpaulin in the shed, ready for the renovations to
begin. I know how old, mouldy and
rat-nibbled some of our book collection is!
Later in the year
some money will be used to make a vertical garden so we need to incorporate
some horticulture and design into the program now so that will be a success
later. So we are working on the
curriculum looking at what worked well and what are challenges are – a lot to
get through in the week but I think we’re well on the way.
The students will
return on Monday – it will be lovely to see them and hear their news. It will
also be interesting to hear their plans so we’ll have more idea about what
needs ‘tweaking’ in the curriculum.
Another project
received a boost while I was home in Hamilton. My friend Anna wants to build a
kindergarten in Engaruka Upper where currently the children and their teacher
meet under a shady tree. The kind and very generous people of Hamilton Uniting
Church have donated $1315 towards the building project and I look forward to
being able to show you pictures of progress very soon.
So the adventure
continues – 4 more months for me here in Tanzania! Keep reading for updates and
thank you all for your support!
